The Outsourcing Debate is on at the Boston Globe
I just read an interesting article today regarding The Boston Globe’s recent decision to cut 125 jobs and to outsource much of those positions to India. The Papers union have recently launch ad campaign stating "It’s the Boston Globe, not the Bangalore Globe"!
The Boston Globe (Parent Company being The New York Times) said that the decision to outsource was a very tough one but critical to the stability and health of the company. While it is very disappointing to see 125 job cuts, the reality is that in our new global economy, more and more companies will be forced to adopt outsourcing practices for their sheer survival. Given the high-end skills of many overseas employers, the quality of work for such companies as The Boston Globe should not diminish, while their costs certainly will.
As hard as it is to see people lose jobs, it is likely a very sensible move for the Newspaper as they seek to solidify the longevity of their business.
Well, the World is truly becoming flat!! Who would ever thought that Employees for the Boston Globe would work across the world in India! These are interesting times.
