Is Outsourcing synonymous with Offshoring?
I want to dispell a big misconception I keep hearing in the media and through other channels! Now, before I go into my rant, I want to qualify that my reference point is the Internet Marketing industry….In other industries, Good outsourcing might be synonomous with Offshoring (ie, Retail Clothing Industry)
As you know, I am a big proponent for Outsourcing as I believe it is cost-effective, efficient and can have a profound impact on the overall success of your business (if done correctly)! However, from own experiences with Outsourcing, I do NOT necessarily believe that effective Outsourcing must be done off-shore (Outside of North America) in order to work. Yes, it is a fact that outsourcing Web Development or design work to Eastern Europe or India will be significantly cheaper than if you contracted a firm in Canada or US. However, I have learned that outsourcing is NOT just about saving money, but finding the highest quality service in the most cost-effective way. In my own outsourcing practices, I have learned to strike that balance between focussing on BOTH quality and cost. My focus has now shifted to securing outsourcing partnerships with quality companies, in keeping in line with my overall budget. So, in my Outsourcing Portfolio, I now outsource both in North America and outside depending on where the best quality work can be done.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I once outsourced an article writing project to a company overseas only to find the quality was poor and I had to start from scratch. I then found a company in the US that offered a very high quality service and benefited my business greatly. So, now, my array of outsourcing partners are situated both in country and overseas. I utlimately want to secure the best expertise for my business irregardless of where they are located.
So, Outsourcing is not about Offshoring your tasks for the cheapest price, but rather sourcing the best skills for the most cost-effective price, which might be in-country or not!
