Microblogging - To Twitter or Not to Twitter?
To Twitter or Not To Twitter? That is the question at least for me today:)! I am not sure how involved you are in microblogging sites like Twitter, Jaiku (recently purchased by Google) and such, but they are definitely the place where VC firms and companies are parking their money in hopes of a big payout!
In this fast paced digital world, it is hard to think of finding time to effectively leverage all the various social and business networking avenues like Linked-in, Facebook, popular blogs and social networks and now Twitter and Jaiku, yet the appeal of little bursts of content and thoughts makes this kind of networking all the more enticing to busy ebusiness folks like myself. I am personally not twittering, primarily cause I am still not 100% sold on the value for my own business purposes.
WebProNews had a great article today on Microblogging that is definitely worth a read. The Author, Jason Lee Miller makes a good point that a company almost needs to outsource a Social Media person to maintain and enhance their business presence across all the many popular forums and social media channels. We touched on this in a previous post, The New Wave of Outsourcing, Social Media Marketing.
In looking at the main future business potential for micro-blogging, I echo Jason’s comments here… "But the real future blockbusters, I think, will be the microblogging platforms that are more tightly targeted and present more intuitively useful variations on the originals."
I had also mentioned that in my 2007 Predictions of New Internet Marketing Trends - Man I’m smart or probably just really good at pointing out the obvious:) I had mentioned that Social Networks would be become more niche and focussed to particular market segments and demographics. That is where the really advertising value lies in Micro-blogging - the ability to deliver targeted ads to a focussed audience (ie A Twitter for Moms - delivering ads for Kids Educational Toys) I can see that becoming a huge ad market as micro-blogging grows into new niche channels.
As I compose this post, I think I have kind of convinced myself that I need to be twittering or thinking more about how I can best connect with my target audience in these micro-blogging platforms. I’m off to activate my dormant Twitter account!
